"No. Let's move now." Maria said with a smile. "Let's be spontaneous. For him." She grinned slyly. "And once this darling beauty comes out, you'll be head over heels in love with her, Dom. You're going to make an amazing father."

Dominic smiled back. "I think you'll be the one spoiling our children." Wherever they went, he would still work for the company, as a manager of a local branch, but the thought of not handling the entire business was such a relief. He was tired of the responsibility, the men he worked with...and the bad memories. This entire city had bad memories. He knew he could not escape them completely, but moving would put them in the back of his mind. "I think...we should wait until the baby is born and well into this world. I can also take care of transferring the business, and then...we'll move."

Maria closed her eyes and smiled. "I think that'd be really great, Dom. Moving... Maybe building a house where our daughter can be spoiled to bits by her father." She opened her eyes and grinned.

He nodded. "I'm glad you understand. Mother and Helen might take a bit more convincing. After all, this company has been our family's business for generation upon generation. Father probably rolled in his grave when I made this decision." He turned around so his back was to the water and leaned against the railing. He tucked a strand of Maria's hair behind her ear. "I don't want our children to be obligated to the Walker Company--however long it may be called that. Of course, if one of them really wants to, then they would be guaranteed a position, but...I think this generation of the Walker family is some indication of the need for change." He rested his hand on Maria's again. "I want to get away from here. I want to move."

Maria nodded. "Dominic I trust you. As a person, as a husband, as a soon-to-be-father, and certainly as a businessman. You know what's best." She kissed him gently on the cheek. "Whatever you have to do must be done. Just make sure you know it's what's right in your heart."

He took a deep breath. "I haven't told anyone else yet, but I think you ought to know. I've been thinking." Dominic looked in her eyes. "I'm going to sell the company."

Dominic sighed. "I hope so. It's a pity that she got caught up in all of this. I hope it was worth it." He leaned over and kissed Maria on the head. "Listen...I need to tell you something."

"I think she wanted to escape." Maria said after a moment. "She doesn't want to hear from us just yet. She'll heal her own way and come back, I'm sure."

Dominic smiled a little and took his wife's hand. "Well...I'm glad he turned himself around before he died. I just wish we knew where they were going. I want to help Jane." They had asked the man who had been selling train tickets that day if he remembered selling them to Silas Walker, but of course he didn't.

Maria gave a soft laugh. "Indeed." She sighed and shook her head. "Eloping... Silas Walker. Doesn't that just sound completely crazy? He changed so much from when I first met him... You both have."

Dominic held her even tighter and, his back against the wall, slid to the floor. He had hated his brother for so many years...for most of his life. The horrible things he had done still hung in the air, but...after years of fighting and arguing, they learned how to get along. They were partners...brothers...friends.
Silas was dead.
He began to sob, the tears stinging his eyes that he would never have shed for his father.
~~~
The next day the police never came back to see the Walkers, but they spoke with Jane's parents briefly. They showed the note, and that was that. The story was true. Jane had taken the train tickets Silas had with him and left with her minimal luggage.
Those who did show up at the Walker residence were vultures who wanted the story on the death of Silas Walker, co-owner of one of the largest companies in the east. Dominic, to get them off of his property, told them quickly that his brother had died due to a long-term illness. When they questioned him about an alleged affair, he declined answering. They asked if he would be making any changes in ownership of the company, and he said not at this time and shut the door in their faces. It took all of sixty seconds, and he cursed under his breath those police officers. It was amazing how quickly private matters became public in his world.
The funeral was the day after that. It came and went in a wave of numbness, and then they were back at home. Dominic found himself once more on the bridge by the lake. Again, he stood staring at the water, dressed in black. This time, his wife stood next to him. "This is a bit familiar," he said softly, resting on the railing.
Helen's eyes were growing red. "Dominic," she said quietly, "before he left, Silas asked me to tell you he was sorry." Then she sat on the floor exactly where she had been standing and began to sob.
Dominic stood very still. He held Maria close to him and looked through the doorway to the parlor. His mother's face was buried in the edge of the sofa, and Ronald knelt behind her, his hand on her shoulder. "I-I guess this was bound to happen sooner or later," he said in a hoarse voice.
